Woven in the Carpet Capital of the World
Founded in 1980 in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh — the city behind 40% of India's carpet exports. What began as one family loom is now among India's most trusted names in handcrafted luxury rugs.
Every rug is hand-woven in 100% pure New Zealand wool — resilient, naturally stain-resistant and extraordinarily soft. A single hand-knotted piece takes 3 months to 2 years and up to 300 KPSI. We control every step in-house — which is why each rug carries a 10-year warranty.

"Ordered the geometric rug for my bedroom and the New Zealand wool is noticeably different from synthetic alternatives. The stain-repellent treatment works brilliantly too. Rugkari's 10-year warranty gave me confidence to invest."
Everything You Need to Know
What makes Rugkari rugs different from other Indian rug brands?
Rugkari has been weaving rugs in Bhadohi — India's "Carpet City" and the world's largest rug-weaving hub — since 1980. Unlike most brands that outsource weaving, Rugkari maintains complete artisan control from wool sourcing to final finishing. All rugs use 100% pure New Zealand wool, selected for its 35-micron fibre diameter that gives it superior softness and durability compared to domestic wool. Our hand-knotted rugs achieve up to 300 KPSI (knots per square inch), a density that only heritage manufacturers can produce, and each piece comes with a 10-year warranty.
Why is New Zealand wool used for luxury rugs?
New Zealand wool is considered the gold standard for luxury rug-making because of its unique properties: fibres are naturally crimped, giving rugs a resilient pile that springs back after foot traffic. It has natural lanolin content that resists staining, is flame-retardant without chemical treatment, and has a finer diameter (around 32–36 microns) than most domestic wool varieties. This combination of softness, durability, and natural stain resistance makes it the preferred material for high-end hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs across the world.
What is the difference between hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and hand-loom rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs are the most labour-intensive and valuable — each knot is tied individually by a master weaver, producing a reversible rug with knot counts from 80 to 300+ KPSI. They can take 3 months to 2 years to complete and are designed to last generations. Hand-tufted rugs use a tufting gun to push loops of wool through a backing fabric. They are faster to produce and more affordable while still being genuinely handmade, but are not reversible. Hand-loom rugs are woven on a traditional loom using interlocking warp and weft threads, producing flat-weave or low-pile rugs known for durability and a distinct artisanal texture.
How do I choose the right rug size for my living room?
For Indian living rooms, the most common sizing rules are: (1) All furniture on the rug — choose a size where all sofa and chair legs sit on the rug, typically 8×10 ft or 9×12 ft for standard rooms. (2) Front legs only — the front legs of seating furniture rest on the rug for a spacious feel, using a 6×9 ft rug. (3) Floating rug — the rug sits in the centre with 18–24 inches of bare floor around it. For dining rooms, allow 24 inches beyond the table edge on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Rugkari offers custom sizing on all collections.
How should I care for and clean a pure wool rug at home?
For routine care: vacuum your wool rug weekly using a low-suction setting without a beater bar, rotating it every 6 months to ensure even wear. For spills, blot immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub — working from the outside inward. For wool-safe cleaning, use cold water with a small amount of mild wool detergent. Rugkari recommends professional deep cleaning every 12–18 months. All Rugkari rugs are eligible for our Stain Repellent treatment, which provides an invisible barrier against spills and is safe for children and pets.
